Born in Lima, Peru, Based in Brooklyn, NY, Maria Chávez is known as an abstract turntablist, sound artist and DJ. Accidents, coincidence and failures are themes that unite her sound sculptures, installations and other works with her solo turntable performance practice. Maria wrote her first book on her unique approach to abstract turntablism in 2012 titled, OF TECHNIQUE: Chance Procedures on Turntable (currently out of stock), a book of essays and illustrations that guide the novice turntablist to explore the world of needles and vinly through the lens of deterioration, destruction and the unexpected.

This past spring, Maria presented a new series of sound sculptural works for the JUDD Foundation in Marfa, Texas titled, “Wind Instruments at the Block, 2016”. Her sculptures are considered the first pieces in the history of the JUDD Foundation to be presented within the walls of Donald Judd’s private home in Maria. Her other works (sound sculptures, sound installations and performances) have been presented this year for the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, Museo Centre del Carmen-Valencia, O’ Gallery- Milan, Cervantes Institute and more. (FULL CV is below) This fall, Maria will be artist in residence with the CEC Artslink in St. Petersburg, Russia and was recently awarded a fellowship with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in Captiva, Florida during summer 2017.

Maria Chavez has shared her expansive music collection alongside iconic electronic musicians and DJ’s like; Simian Mobile Disco, POWELL, Rick Wade (Detroit), Francois K, Beatrice Dillon and others. You can hear her sets, that vary from the eclectic to House & Techno, in openings for art museums (MoMA, , Haus für elektronische Künste- Basel), gala events (Van Alen Institute, El Museo del Barrio, BRIC-Brooklyn), New York Fashion Week- NYFW (BeBe, Bimba y Lola, Pola Thomson, VOUTSA), festivals (Moving Sounds, 9 Evenings, Villa Romana Festival- Firenze) and radio stations.
